ScreenTale 1.13.0
ScreenTale 1.13.0 gives each Camera clip its own layout, moves the camera bubble out of the cursor’s way, and makes recording and exporting lighter and faster.
- Camera clips now own their layout. Select a Camera clip on the Timeline to choose Picture in Picture, Side by Side or Full Screen and style its bubble for that clip. To change the layout part-way, split the clip. The Camera Changes row is gone; older projects open with their Camera clips split so they look exactly as before.
- New Avoid cursor: the Picture in Picture bubble slides aside while the recorded cursor is near it, then returns, in both the preview and exports. It is on by default; choose the direction in Settings > Camera, or override it for one project in the Camera Inspector.
- Annotations now follow the pointer while you drag them in the preview.
- Every Inspector colour uses one colour picker with suggested swatches, the macOS colour panel, a hex field and an Opacity slider.
- Annotation layers are shown in a compact Layers list where you can show, hide, lock, rename, reorder and delete them.
- ScreenTale no longer saves projects automatically. An Edited badge shows unsaved changes, Save (⌘S) saves them, and closing, switching projects or quitting asks whether to save.
- Dragging and resizing in the Fixed Zoom navigator works again.
- New Recording size setting (Compact, Balanced or Maximum) in Settings > Recording. New installations start at Balanced and 30 fps for smaller recordings. Camera footage is recorded at 1080p.
- Recordings look sharper at the same file size, and recorded audio is stored as Apple Lossless, which takes far less space with no loss in quality.
- You can hide the floating camera preview while recording; the camera keeps recording.
- Turning the microphone on or off, or switching cameras, no longer reloads the camera preview.
- Video exports are faster, and GIF exports finish several times faster.
- GIF export works again, and an intermittent “media backend failed” export error is fixed.
ScreenTale 1.1.1
ScreenTale 1.1.1 adds sharper zoomed recordings, fixes exports with audio and makes editing feel immediate.
- New experimental HiDPI capture option in Settings > Recording and the floating bar’s Options menu. On a standard-resolution display, macOS draws the recorded display at 2x so zoomed-in footage keeps more detail. It is off by default and asks for confirmation before turning on.
- Zoomed-in screen content is sharper in the preview and in exports.
- Exports that include microphone or system audio no longer fail after all frames have rendered.
- Video exports finish faster: a 1440p 60 fps HEVC export takes about half as long as before.
- Dragging Padding and other Frame settings, or a zoom’s Level, now updates the preview while you drag instead of after you let go.
- Sliders no longer jump back and forth while you drag, and the Zoom panel no longer shifts its layout during edits.
ScreenTale 1.0.4
ScreenTale 1.0.4 makes quitting ScreenTale reliable.
- Quitting ScreenTale from a script, an automation tool or another app now quits ScreenTale itself, instead of sometimes failing because the background recorder received the request.
ScreenTale 1.0.3
ScreenTale 1.0.3 improves upgrading older recordings, Dock behavior and license renewal.
- Upgrading an older recording now places the upgraded copy at the top of Recents with an “(Upgraded)” suffix, without asking where to save it. The original recording stays unchanged.
- Older recordings that still need an upgrade show a yellow warning icon next to their name in the Library.
- Opening ScreenTale no longer shows a second, bouncing ScreenTale icon in the Dock.
- A license key activated on this Mac now renews correctly while you are signed in to your ScreenTale account, so clean exports and updates continue without interruption.
ScreenTale 1.0.0
ScreenTale 1.0 introduces the Rust desktop app for Mac recording, editing and export.
- Open an existing Swift recording in the Rust editor to create an upgraded copy. The original recording stays intact. New and upgraded projects use the new project format and require ScreenTale 1.0 or later for editing.
- Review complete release notes, download progress and update controls in the new Software Updates window. Choose Skip This Version, Remind Me Later, or Install & Relaunch.
- Existing Swift installations receive this transition through their current Sparkle update channel. After installing ScreenTale 1.0, future updates use the new updater.
